Wg Cdr Phil Sturley served 3 flying tours on No II(AC) Sqn achieving over 2000 hours on the Sqn with the Jaguar. His first tour was Feb 1977 to Mar 1980; his second as Flt Cdr from Feb 1982 to Apr 1984 and, finally, as Boss from Mar 1987 to Dec 1988 when he saw the handover of Jaguar to Tornado. He has since filled a wide range of command and staff posts, including OC RAF Cottesmore, AOC No 38 Group, Assistant Chief of the Air Staff in London and Chief of Staff HQ AIRNORTH in Germany, with responsibility for establishing ISAF air operations in Afghanistan.
He retired from active service as an Air Marshal in 2005 but continues to fly as a reserve officer. He is President of the RAF Association; Special Adviser to the House of Commons Defence Committee and Lead Mentor at the Higher Command and Staff Course, Shrivenham. He is also manager of the British Gliding Team. |
