Squadron Leader "Bill" Opie became squadron commander on the 21st January 1938 taking over from
Squadron Leader Desoer. He had the distinction of being the last CO to head the squadron as a Biplane operator
given that he took over around the same time as the squadron was re-equipping from the Audax to the
Hawker Hector and then oversaw the further re-equipment to the Westland Lysander. He remained the
boss until April of the following year.
