Major Cooper took over command of II(AC) Sqn a couple of months before the Battle of the Somme
in which the squadron was heavily engaged. At that time the squadron had 18 BE 2s on strength soon
to increase to 21. The squadron suffered great losses during the ensuing months as they conducted
spotting missions for the Artillery and it soon became apparent that re-equipment to a more suitable aircraft
was necessary if such missions were to be continued. It was during Major Cooper's period on watch
that II(AC)'s aircraft first adopted the triangle markings as an indication to our own troops that we were
"the good guys". He remained in command until August of the following year. |
