The Battle Honours of II(AC) Squadron

Almost since birth II(AC) Squadron has been involved with one major conflict or other through to the present day.  Its contribution is recognised by some of these honours modestly displayed upon the standard which can only hint at what struggles took place to earn this recognition.

The full list of honours bestowed upon the squadron are as follows:

  Western Front 1914-1918

Qualification: For squadrons participating in the operations of the Allied Airborne Army, August 1914 to November 1918.

  Mons

Qualification: For squadrons participating in the Battle of Mons and the retreat of the British Expeditionary Force to the River Marne, 14-23 August 1914.

  Neuve Chappelle

Qualification: For squadrons participating in the operations of the British Expeditionary Force to capture the heights of Aubers Ridge at Neuve Chapelle in March 1915.

  Ypres

Qualification: For squadrons participating in the operations of the British Expeditionary Force in the capture and defence of Ypres between October 1914 - May 1915.

  Loos

Qualification: For squadrons participating in the operations of the British Expeditionary Force in the offensive and retreat from Loos in September 1915.

  Somme 1916

Qualification: For squadrons participating in the operations of the British Expeditionary Force in the first Battle of the Somme February - November 1915.

  Arras

Qualification: For squadrons participating in the operations of the British Expeditionary Force in the 2nd Battle of Arras (resulting in the capture of the Vimy Ridge) April 1917.

  Somme 1918

Qualification: For squadrons participating in the operations of the British Expeditionary Force in the second Battle of the Somme September 1918.

  Lys

Qualification: For squadrons participating in the operations of the British Expeditionary Force in the Lys Offensive (Battle of Estaires) April 1918..

   France and the Low Countries 1939-1940

Qualification: For operations in France and the Low Countries between the outbreak of war and the fall of France, 3 September 1939 to 25 June 1940.

  Dunkirk

Qualification: For operations covering the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force and the French from Dunkirk, 26 May to 4 June 1940.

  Fortress Europe 1942-1944

Qualification: For operations by aircraft based in the British Isles against targets in Germany, Italy and enemy-occupied Europe, from the fall of France to the invasion of Normandy.

  France and Germany 1944-1945

Qualification: For operations over France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during the liberation of north-west Europe and the advance into the enemy's homeland, from the start of air action preparatory to the invasion of France to VE Day, April 1944 to 8 May 1945.

  Normandy 1944

Qualification: For operations supporting the Allied landings in Normandy, the establishment of the lodgement area and the subsequent breakthrough, June to August 1944.

  Arnhem

Qualification: For squadrons participating in the operations of the Allied Airborne Army, 17-26 September 1944.

  Walcheren

Qualification: For operations in support of the capture of the island of Walcheren, 3 October to 9 November 1944.

  Rhine

Qualification: For operations in support of the battle for the Rhine crossing, 8 February to 24 March 1945.

  Gulf 1991

Qualification: For operations against Iraqi invasion forces in Kuwait January-March 1991.
