In 1976, at RAF Laarbruch, No. II (AC) Squadron, RAF, re-equipped from the McDonnell FGRmk2 Phantom to the Sepecat GRmk1 Jaguar. As ever on such occasions, the change introduced not only an aircraft type but also a bunch of people who would operate and maintain the new equipment. Those who were involved in whatever capacity could not have appreciated just how far-reaching the effect this "coming together" would be, for over the years, long after tours of duty had finished and folks had gone their separate ways, the original "re-equipers" still manage to get together from time to time to share tales and confidencies of those Laarbruch days.
At one such recent reunion (more than a quarter of a century later!) a view was expressed that whilst the wonders of the Web transmits with ease "official" squadron history sites, these formal accounts often miss aspects which could make those histories so much richer. Those aspects are, of course, the stories and personal accounts of those folks who served and were part of the unit in question; the essential ingredient of what it was like to actually to have "been there". It didn't require a great leap of imagination to appreciate then how easy it would be to use the Web to fill in the holes and, maybe, set some of the record straight!
So here you have it, a site which might give you more of an insight to Squadron Life; an opportunity for those who are qualified to provide a bit of insider input a place to send it; and last (but not least) a channel for ex-members of the Class of '75-'79 to get in touch. So, with the immortal words, "How good were we?", welcome to our site and enjoy your visit.
