100th Anniversary of II(AC) Squadron - News
|
 |
One thing for sure is that in 1912 when the pioneers of II(AC) Squadron took to the air in their fragile craft they would have been far too busy to give thought to, "what comes next"! Certainly, they would have had no idea that their efforts would develop and continue under the banner of "Shiny Two" with hardly a break for at least 100 years. Without any doubt they gave no thought whatever as to what their descendants would be wrestling with and how the squadron's Centenary should be celebrated! Had they been blessed with such foresight they would be pleasantly impressed to learn that their successors a century later on the squadron have been giving a great deal of consideration to how those stuttering beginnings at Farnborough together with all the subsequent years of service and sacrifice should be marked.
This page has been created in order to do just that; let the World know what is planned and what so far has happened in 2012.
Here is the Centenary News so far:

Commemorative Painting
At the beginning of November a presentation was made to the Squadron at RAF Marham of a painting commissioned by the Association to commemorate the 100th anniversary. The picture was conceived as a fantasy depicting a scene from the earliest days of the squadron but containing "clues" as to the identities of most of the aircraft types flown by the squadron since 1912. Certainly it was never intended to be an "Airfix Catalogue" showing the impossibility of pre-WW1 aeroplanes flying in formation with the jet-powered types of the latter years. Rather, a celebration of the rich aviation diversity of Shiny Two wrapped up as a cerebral exercise! The painting was well received and is now proudly displayed in the foyer of the squadron office complex where it confronts any visitors or "passing foot-traffic".

The artist, Clive Brooks, served on the squadron in the days of the Jaguar in the mid-1970s as a ground engineer. When he wasn't involved with the "Day Job" he was prolific in producing paintings to order from a wide ranging clientele; individuals; messes; HQs and squadron crewrooms. A measure of his standard is that one of his works has subsequently been auctioned at Sothebys. Prints of the commemorative painting are available to order and are offered in a choice of frame styles - see the choices displayed above. The prices quoted are inclusive of P&P to the UK (overseas orders will, obviously, be more expensive and will be advised on receipt of your query) and each sale will generate a donation to the squadron memorial fund.
If you wish to place an order then send your details - frame choice and address - with a cheque for the appropriate amount to Clive Brooks at:
3, Quartermass Close
Warners End
Hemel Hempstead
Herts, HP1 3QU
or an eMail to "brat93@ntlworld.com" (alternatively, click here ).
(PS - Completed orders will contain an "Answer Sheet" as to significance of the various elements in the picture and the aircraft type to which they refer).
